| Tex Mex left overs with home made tortillas |
So corn tortillas may not sound that exciting to you who can pick up fresh ones anytime you want and not pay through the nose. Since the tortilla factory in Perth closed I have occasionally been shelling out $5 for six tortillas. They tear really easy but taste alright, but as you may agree that is a lot to pay for a tortilla.
Mom brought me a tortilla press that Janet helped her pick out, that was half the battle, the next was finding the Masa Harina. So I got some corn meal at an Indian shop that didn't look like any cornmeal I've ever scene, but it didn't work. Then I tried to make a GF flour tortilla with the press, that definitely didn't work. Then I tried to use the press to make pita bread, that was all right. Then I remembered somewhere in the pantry was an unidentified corn flour that I bought because it smelled like tortillas. It had been labeled at the bulk shop as white corn meal.
Guess what!!! It was Masa Harina!! And it was so easy to make tortillas with it. Brilliant! So yummy!
Now if I can only remember where the shop is I bought it at.
I fear it is from Fremantle which is an hours drive. Well needs must I suppose.
Yummy! I should really learn to make those. And they taste so much better than what you'd buy at a store! Actually, I take it back ... I should really have Tati learn to make those. ;)
ReplyDeleteGlad you got your fix. Growing up around yummy Mexican food in the Western US we get so used to it, and then it is hard to replace elsewhere. In NY, the only food I cooked was Mexican, because the other stuff I liked (Italian for example) was easy to come by, thankfully I had some good resources. Rachel is always wanting to make homemade flour tortillas, and while I make a lot of things from scratch, I am just not motivated to add that, I am with Jonalyn, teach our daughters to do that!
ReplyDeleteWay to go! I won't ever eat packaged corn tortillas in the states, they are gross compared to homemade ones and unrecognizable to the fresh ones made and sold on every corner in Mexico.
ReplyDeleteAmber, How satisfying to know that you have found the masa harina and can now make proper corn tortillas. I am pleased that the tortilla press I bought you won't just be taking up needed space in your cupboard. Your whole dinner looks very tasty.-----Mom
